Guardian Angel – Chapter 12: Closer

Even I’m shocked by my newly discovered confidence. I no longer mope around; instead, I make myself useful by doing the laundry, getting groceries or washing dishes. The hotel room is eerily quiet. (Rachel went to run errands.) Bored, I plop down on the couch and close my eyes, hoping to have a vision. But the only thing I see is Chase’s face. Frustrated, I sit up. Every time I close my eyes, he’s there, and he’s distracting me. I now only have two days left and no time for being distracted. My confidence wavers a little.

I need to focus.

For ten minutes, I lay with my eyes closed, hands clasped, whispering, “You can do this, Jamie. Concentrate.” However, because I have never tried to have a vision before, my attempts yield only a headache. I sit up, head throbbing, wondering what I’m going to do. I only have two days left, and I have had no visions recently. I have no new clues for where I need to be. Just as I’m about to give up, my vision is blackened and I find myself in the most vivid vision I have ever had. I’m in the car. I see the billboard, the calendar, the hedge, and an oncoming truck, swerving as if he has lost control of the two-ton vehicle. The usual screams fill my ears, and my instinct is to panic.

Realizing I have only a few seconds to gather clues, I take a deep breath and scan my surroundings. After only a split second, I’ve spotted a building that I recognize. I saw it in a magazine Ms. Ashton had.

Just as I am pulled out of my vision, Rachel enters the room.

“Jorvik City!” I yell.

“What?” she looks startled.

I stare at her, wide-eyed. “I need to go to Jorvik City.”

The next morning, we’re in the car and on our way. My head is swimming with anxieties and the lurking knowledge that I am going to die sometime the next day. As I stare out the window, watching the scenery pass and knowing that this is only the beginning of our day-long drive, I can’t bring myself to think of my life outside of this. Miss Ashton, Rachel, Chase, Rose, the farm… For the first time I can remember, I don’t care if there’s a family and a life I’m missing out on. All I want is what I had. But I’ll never have it again.

A tear rolls down my cheeks. Tomorrow, I’ll cease to exist. I’ll still be living somewhere, but that’s not me. It may look like me, and she may have the same personality and lost memory as me, but she’s not me. What I have realized is that I stopped existing in two places as soon as I started making new memories. If that girl – the one who’s still alive – is me, then she’d have the same life and memories as me. She doesn’t. She has a family, a family that belongs to me but I will never know. She has dreams, dreams that may have once been mine but are now lost.

I no longer want my old life – her life… I just want this life.

My life.

The Chosen – Chapter 1

Whispers filled my head, I felt a strange sensation as if I was being lifted up and thrown around.

‘Natasha wake up!’ a sharp voice cut through my dreams and I woke up with a start.

‘Huh?’ I wiped my eyes groggily as I tried to get my bearings on where I was.

‘Get up! You’ll be late for your riding lessons!!!’ the sharp voice screeched from my bedroom door. I sighed, my step-sister Jasmine King, she didn’t ride but she was determined to make a fool of me so that she could show off how much more stylish she was than me.

‘Yeah, Yeah, coming , don’t get your tail in a twist’ I grumbled hauling myself out of bed and stumbled around the room trying to gind my riding clothes in my messy room.

‘Tasha!’  A pebble tapped my window and I turned to find my best friend Millie Starr, already in her riding clothes her chestnut hair in a sleek French Braid waving at me frantically.

‘Hey Lil!’ I opened my window welcoming the fresh Jorvik air.

‘Isolde is cross again, can I come in?’

‘Let me guess, issues with Loke again?’ I rolled my eyes and stepped back, letting my immaculate friend climb gracefully over the windowsill.

‘You’re not dressed yet?’ Millie eye my room with caution as she stepped over my muddy Jodhpurs and stained polo shirts.

‘Errr, yeah, Jas just woke me up’ I grinned sheepishly and found my new pair of beige jodhpurs, throwing them on I paired them with a navy blue polo shirt with JSA on it and corralled my hair into a messy high ponytail. I looked like a slug compared to immaculate Millie.

‘Let’s go!’ I cheered charging through the house into the kitchen where I grabbed an apple and a piece of bread without stopping and raced outside.

‘Echo!’ I waved my apple at a sleek Friesian stallion who was romping in the paddock with Millie’s Lippizaner.

‘Ever, quit it’ Millie giggled as Evermist lipped at her hair, her smoky gray hide shining with the morning dew. A sudden pain filled my head as I staggered backwards. My mind flew and I was suddenly standing in a strange stone circle with a strange lady, a dark-skinned girl with a brown pony tail, a fairs-skinned girl with her hair squashed down with a beanie, a weird hooded figure, and some strange squirrel with weird markings on it’s fur.

‘Ummm, hello?’ they didn’t seem to hear me and kept talking in hushed voices, gesturing here and there.

‘Tasha!’ a rough hand jostled my shoulder and my mind jolted back to the paddock. I saw a concerned Milliw with worry written on her face.

‘Tasha? Tasha, what is going on’ Millie asked gently.

‘I… I don’t know, c’mon, it’s over now, let’s just go get ready, Uncle Bob would never forgive us if we were late for a riding lesson. Millie looked at me sideways as we lead out horses over to the hitching rail where several girls where already tacking up.

‘You better tell me what’s wrong soon’ Millie hissed at me before turning away to adjust Ever’s bridle. I saw her pretty brown eyes were shiny with tears and hurt had replaced concern. This was the first time either of us had not told each other something. Echo nickered at me and nuzzled my hair, turning to him I concentrated on wrapping Echo’s legs with blue leg wraps. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Millie mount and canter away, we never left without each other.

‘Friend issues? I knew it would happen, you’re such a weirdo’ I turned to see Melissa smirking at me, her expensive Morgan, Opal, tugging on the reins anxiously as Melissa looked down at me from her high perch.

‘Get lost I growled swiping a towel across Echo’s rump, cleaning off any sticky grass. This was going to be a terribly long year…..

A Safer Day with Jarl’s Insurances

Rita, sorry to interrupt you. But I have fantastic news! I’m going to get a new fishing boat! So Madison and I will be able to go fishing again soon. We’ll definitely avoid Cape Sorrow from now on, though. Ho ho!

Unfortunately it will take a while for the new fishing boat to arrive, but until then Jarl’s Insurances will lend me a temporary boat. I’m going off to get it today! I know Madison wanted to come along to Fort Pinta and watch the buses that pass through there. Ho ho! That kid is always up to some kind of game.

Right, back to that boat I’m about to get. It looks as though it’s really big. Not at all as cozy as a small fishing boat, but I’ll only be using it until my new one is ready.

With it’s central position and beautiful building, you can’t call Cafe Harp anything but the heart of Aideen’s Plaza. Everyday it attracts all kinds of visitors, locals as well as tourists.

Recently the cafe owners made a brave decision when they chose to renew its already delicious menu. Apart from adding a few new pastries, you can also buy yummy ice cream from their little ice cream counter. I, Delores Staunton, reporter at The Jorvik Gazette, set off to try the new menu and to find out what the visitors thought of the changes.

The visitors’ opinions varied more than expected. While some embraced the changes with open arms, other seemed tow ant the old and less varied menu back. One of the guests who wholeheartedly supported the new menu was Eijnar Alderson. He couldn’t wait to try out the new flavors. Something else that really mattered to him was how this was going to affect Leonardo’s. If the selection were to remain the same, or if Cafe Harp would offer new flavors which Leonardo’s doesn’t currently offer. 

However, among the guests who did not share Eijnar’s enthusiasm, was Mr Anwir, a not to chatty businessman. When he was given to opportunity to describe his feelings for the new menu at Cafe Harp, he chose the expression “Get lost!”.

On the other hand, Mr Anwir’s friend, Carl Delman, was of a totally different opinion. When he was asked the same question, the answer was “I love ice cream! I’m going to eat ice cream here every day of the week!”.

After having been given the opportunity to talk to all these different, but generally happy ice cream enthusiasts, who had gathered to enjoy the new menu at Cafe Harp, it was finally my turn to try it.

Kudos goes to Cafe Harp’s ice cream, but Leonardo’s is still the place to visit if you want to eat ice cream, with Cafe Harp trailing not too far behind. So if you’re in town, you should definitely visit Cafe Harp and check out their new menu. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

The Jorvik vermin control department doesn’t like it when too many pigeons are gathered in the same place. They can be really scary when they get tough.

A few small pigeons are nothing to worry about so I don’t see why people should get so upset.

But I heard that Yvonne complain loudly that she certainly would make sure someone did something about this ‘pigeon problem.’

Young lady, I’m terribly sorry that I’ve caused so much trouble for the little birds. Can you help them once again?

What you have to do is scare them away before the Jorvik vermin control department get here. 

Pigeons are easily frightened, but it doesn’t last so long, and if they see that their pigeon pals are still here, they will come back again.

Young lady, you’ll have to scare the pigeons away quickly so they don’t come back.

It’s just a matter of running around and waving your arms a little so they fly away, but make sure that all the pigeons have flown away before any others can land again.

I will come to Governor’s Fall with you and keep a lookout at the tram station to make sure no one else starts following us while you are following her!

It would be safest for Jorvik if that was the case, but a little bird told me that things appear to be different.

Who are my little birds? They are Polly and Palle, my budgies. 

If you think she’s innocent, we have to know for sure that she isn’t bluffing, just waiting to steal Leonardo’s ice cream recipes and sell them to a foreign power for lots of money so they can create a rival ice cream company that could threaten all of Jorvik!

Me and My Bird Phobia

Well, I was stupid and threw away the key to the store.

I know, I know! It was really stupid but you know, I have a real bird phobia.

I was going to open the shop a few hours ago, but when I got to the shop, there was a bunch of magpies at the front door. I first tried screaming at them to scare them away, but they just stood and squawked at me. It was like they knew I was scared!

Without thinking, I threw the key at them. It made them fly away, but unfortunately the key got stuck on one of the bird’s legs…

Did I see which direction the birds flew? Ha, those bad birds usually sit and hide in the trees outside Leonardo’s ice cream parlor. They’re just waiting to scare the poor innocent people.

Crayfish Storage!

Without Pier 12, the harbor wouldn’t be around anymore…

That was where Kai Zwolf slipped and fell into the water. On him, he had a contract allowing the harbor to be torn down and replaced by a huge garage for the land crabs. Luckily, the contract was destroyed by the salty water!

Rita, I just realized I don’t have anywhere to store the crayfish!

Could you go and get a steel barrel for me? I would have liked to help you carry it, but I think it’s best for my back if I don’t. Also, the crayfish might get lonely if I leave!

There should be a steel barrel by the fence near the old warehouse building!

SSO Horses

SSO Horses is a mobile app companion to the full SSO game. It is free to download and play on any Android or Apple device.

In SSO Horses you can create a foal and raise into a full grown horse. Choose the color you would like and start the game! Foals take ten real ten real life days to fully mature. Each day you will receive new quests to care for and train your horse, starting with only one training activity, and get up to five activities each day, to level up your horse.

At the end of the ten days you can choose to pay Star Coins (using your SSO login and password) to transfer the horse to your online game and get that horse in game already trained to level ten. You can also continue to play with your horse in the app for free, or choose a new foal to raise.

There is currently only the Mustang available, in three different colors. Cost to transfer is 969 Star Coins (same price as regular Mustangs).

More breeds and colors will be made available in future updates.

I’m Still Alive!

Hi, all!

First off, I owe you all an apology. Shortly after the release of Jorvik City, my laptop struggled to support the game. It was playable but with the amount of lag and wonky physics I experienced, the game slowly lost it’s interest to me. I had stopped posting because of that. I’m sorry for not updating you all sooner. But in other news, barring unforseen computer meltdowns, I am back for good. My awesome boyfriend gifted me a (mostly complete) gaming PC for Christmas. He still had to source a hard drive and OS. We also were waiting on some changes to our apartment to be able to allow room for two computers. We’ve gotten things up and running on mine and today I logged in to the game for the first time in a long time (I was still wearing my Christmas outfit, oh dear!)

I am working on getting caught up on messages and quests on my main account and then will be updating the blog. My first order will be to update the horse guide, since that is the most frequently viewed page on the site. My plan is to have that done by this coming week. I do have family coming in to town this weekend but I have plenty of free time on week day evenings, so it shouldn’t take too long to do.

After updating the guide, I will be returning to regular quest updates. I also will be writing a section about the SSO Horses app.

I want to thank all of you for your patience and for sticking with me though this. I’m sure if my favorite site stopped updating after two months, I might give up hope for it, but many of you haven’t. And I want you all to know that has not gone unnoticed or unapprciated.

You all are the reason I do this and you really are the stars of this site.

Amnesia – Chapter 2

‘Keri’

The voice wavers in and out of my hearing.

‘Keri sweetie, wake up’

There it comes again. The voice is kind and sweet, a light in the darkness.

‘Keri, open your eyes honey’

I become aware of my body, lying on hard, cold, tiles. I open my eyes and see a concerned Sandra hovering over me.

‘What happened?’ I croak.

‘You fainted’ Sandra says, concerned. ‘How come?’

I close my eyes and wonder back into the murkiness of my memories. The last thing I remember was standing in front of a mirror.

I remembered something

A jolt of excitement rushes through my body.

I remembered something important

I struggle harder, determined to save the memory before I lose it again.

It was a name of someone…..

With a final effort I think harder then I ever had before.

‘Justin’ I say, sitting up.

‘What was that honey?’ Sandra asks, completely missing the importance of the word.

‘I was trying to remember something before I fainted’ I say, full of hope. If I can remember one thing, then I can remember another.

‘What did you remember?’  Sandra asks, blue eyes twinkling.

‘A name. Justin’

‘Justin’ Sandra says, thinking. ‘I think Thomas Moorland had a son called Justin. Justin Moorland’

I feel my heart beating faster.

‘Justin Moorland. Now why does that name sound familiar? Oh, I remember now, he disappeared a week or two ago. It was all over the news….’

My head starts pounding and I know that this is no coincidence. I remember one name and it has to be a guy who disappeared a week ago.

‘Okay honey, I’ve my shift is over now but you press the buzzer whenever you need someone’ Sandra says.

I smile at her and nod, my hair falling across my face.

Sandra flashes me a grin before walking out of the room leaving the faint scent of perfume behind.

With a loud sigh, I lean back against the pillows, my head buzzing full of unwanted thoughts. I look at the curtains which are billowing in the breeze. A warm ray of sunshine falls directly on the window seat and I decide to relax and bathe in the warm sun. I sit and the warm leather squeaks. I smile and close my eyes and let myself relax in the warm sunshine.

‘Knock, knock’

The bright, cheerful voice wakes me up. I look up and see a girl with blonde hair.

‘Umm, hello?’ I say, confused as why she’s here.

‘How are you Keri? Are you feeling better?’

Her loud voice is familiar but I can’t remember who she is.

‘Uh, do I know you? I’m not sure if anyone told you but I have amnesia’ I say to the girl.

‘I’m Maggie. I’m your best friend? Remember? Amnesia can’t hold back your memories of me! I mean, we’re the best of friends!’ Maggie’s hazel eyes glow as she speaks.

‘I’m sorry Maggie but I don’t know you’

Her face falls visibly at this but she still tries.

‘Do you remember anything? Like when you first arrived here and you met me. You fell off your leased horse…….Firegazer I think?…..and landed in front of me. I burst into laughter and then we became best friends. Do you remember your beautiful horse Mystery? He was a Morgan, the best you ever had. We were all jealous of you as he could outrun all of our horses’ she pauses desperately.

Her words run through my head. I had a horse, a Morgan.

‘Did I have any parents?’ I ask, curious.

Maggie’s face pales.

‘No…..no you didn’t. I remember you crying one night and you told me that they had decided to keep you here’

My heart sinks. Parents that didn’t want me?

‘Tell me everything about me. Please’ I beg.

Maggie takes a seat on my bed, more than happy to oblige.

‘Well I first met you, like I said, when you fell off your Jorvik Warmblood, Firegazer. He was a dun gelding, a perfect beginners horse. Justin had picked him out especially for you. You became a great horse rider and eventually you outgrew Firegazer. Me, you and some of the other riders from our club all went over to Firgrove and you picked out a Morgan. He was a beautiful golden colour with a gorgeous white mane and tail. You called him Mystery. You and that horse were soul mates I reckon. You went everywhere with him and spent so much time training him. All that training finally paid off when you won the Moorland Championship with him. All of our club was so jealous of that gorgeous, gold ribbon.  You and Mystery especially loved the Riding Hall because they held weekly competitions. I can’t remember if you ever won something but you certainly tried your best. Then a week or so ago, you were out doing something, I don’t know what, when you just disappeared. I go out looking for you and the next thing I know, your in Epona and in a hospital. Crazy’

Maggie’s words stir up memories. I remember a golden horse who I loved, who I adored. I remember friends, all the drama and fights we had. I remember the thrill of winning the Moorland Championships, me in the newspaper the next day. I remember so much yet I can’t seem to remember anymore about Justin or how I ended up in this hospital.

‘Well when you get let out of hospital, I’ve set up a riding club here. You’ll find me at New Hillcrest stables, okay?’ Maggie says. She smiles at me before opening the door and leaving my room.

‘Okay’ I say to an empty room.

Preparing for a Little Adventure

Hello there Rita. Nice to see you! What brings you this way today?

Everything’s just fine here! Business is improving fast now that other people can get here easily. Actually, now I come to think of it, there’s one thing that’s not quite right. Since the boat sank, we’ve not been able to enjoy all the delicious fruits of the sea!

You wonder why I don’t just fish from the land instead of on the boat? Hmm. Yeah, I suppose I could, especially since it’s been forever since I was able to offer the family some really tasty seafood… We’re so lucky down here in South Hoof, the fishing is so excellent. It’s the perfect environment to hose a wide range of sea life, and you can even fish for crayfish and oysters right there on the beach. Oh, Sigrid really loves oysters. 

You think we could do something about it and try our fishing luck? Right then! Let’s do just that! Go take a look in the box just here to see if we’ve got any crayfish traps left.

To the Sea!

Perfect, Rita! Now we’ve got all the crayfish traps and they’re even looking in pretty good shape, which is lucky! Now all that’s left to do is head to the beach so we can set them up.

You’ll give me a lift so we can set them up together? Sounds like a fine idea, I won’t need to make that long trip on foot! I’ll show you where we can set up the traps when we get there.

One more thing… Here on South Hoof, we spit three times in the water when we set up crayfish traps. It’s mostly superstition, but it’s said to bring good luck and a good catch, hehe!

Now we’re equipped with good knives, we’ll also need a good bucket to keep the oysters in. There should be a couple of blue buckets around here somewhere that I used to take out with me on the boat, but they don’t seem to be here… I use them for other stuff too so I suppose they could be pretty much anywhere.

So you think it takes ages to collect oysters. Right! Good. I’ve shown you how to do it, so I suppose it’s down to proving whether you know exactly what you’re doing with a little race to see who can get oysters the fastest. Umm, shall we say seven each?

Objectives: Beat Jonas in a race to see who can pick up seven oysters in the shortest time.

The quest may be difficult if you play on a laptop track pad. A mouse and good keyboard skills are recommended. 

Race to each oyster bed and use the knife to pick up seven oysters before Jonas does. If he collects them all before you do, you will lose and have to try the quest over again.
